In April 2019 HIV Voices and Positive East launched a new spoken word, film and performance project: HIV Voices: Talking Together, funded by Public Health England and the HIV Innovation Fund.
The focus of Talking Together is on mixed status relationships with an aim to tackle HIV stigma through a series of workshops and the development of five spoken word films.
Over the course of eight weeks, a group of HIV positive individuals explored drama techniques, creative writing, rap and autobiography to generate a range of material on the theme of mixed status relationships - the outcome being five final pieces of performance writing. The writing reveals the complexities of being in a mixed status relationship; the positive impact of mutual support and education, as well as the tensions brought about through stigmatisation (self and/or societal). Read together they are a powerful testament to self love, healing and self empowerment.
The spoken word pieces were then filmed using actors and screened at African festivals around London and in GP surgeries during the Summer.
